Leadership and Learning are indispensable to each other

“Leadership and Learning are indispensable to each other.” – John F. Kennedy

I believe that an organization’s ability to grow and compete is wholly dependent on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of its people, as performance is the outcome of learning on individual, group, and organizational level. Not providing the right learning initiatives at the right time to the right group may leave the workforce unprepared for critical challenges.

Successful learning = knowledge gathering + application + (desired change + well-being)

mathias-sager-stand-up-II-painting-201603

It works best for me to gather knowledge in a self-study mode. In order to turn the knowledge into practical and positive learning experiences though, the exchange with study and work colleagues is valuable for me. Therefore I appreciate the exchange of experiences and opinions and the possibility for constructive feedback.

Systematic notes taking, as well as the visualization of key aspects and inter-dependencies have proven to be a good means to make knowledge effectively and efficiently accessible for the continuous practical application in my daily life and work. Ultimately a learning experience was successful for me when I can observe increased understanding and desired changes in my behavior and well-being.

What’s successful learning for you?

My Definition of Hard Work and Great Achievement

My definition of hard work has to do primarily with openness, courage and authenticity, rather than just with working long hours and the goal of material profit, although it can involve massive action and material achievements too. I don’t agree with the saying about success that goes ‘One percent is inspiration, ninety-nine percent is perspiration.’ Accessing one’s spiritual foundation and deep inspiration makes hard work less a matter of disciplined suffering than a journey of happy effort. Inspiration either leads to success or a fantastic fun time. Personal growth / maturity is to learn to do what we really want to do, always again and with a lot of commitment to our true inner voice, which is the call of the universal intelligence that can not be wrong.

EARTH – Education, ART, and Happiness

Learn and experience for life

I recommend, given the over-emphasis on training of technical skills at all levels of the education system, to complement or replace existing syllabus with “live life” lessons as suggested below. Those in power often tend to have little interest in a prosperous society of equal participants. Rather, it is about maintaining existing privileges. There is a lot at stake. If the ultimate goal of education for all citizens was empowering learning and self-fulfillment, the base for more contributions to social welfare would be created. Currently we are still working towards changing the system of systematic breeding of interchangeable gearwheels in our capitalist economies in favor of few immensely rich ‘landlords’ into a more humanized system.

Suggested life lessons:

  • How to build a universal spiritual foundation?
  • How to evaluate purpose in life?
  • How to overcome fear and gain confidence?
  • How to strengthen character for well-being?
  • How to think positively for greater achievements?
  • How to ask better questions?
  • How to make higher human impact through artistic expression?

Expect More. No human waste please.

Whether in a private, corporate or public context, we should always be aware of the effects of our approaches to human resource development. Are we really enabling learning experiences that promote personal growth for all?

It is highly irresponsible to invest only little in holistic personnel development processes – even if this is justified with low level expectation also in terms of Return on Invest. Low investment in people cannot be justified by anything though. I consider it as unethical to allow human potential (that is always available anyway) untapped. No human waste please.

The possibility of new experiences and personal growth is a basic need in the sense that these are the most important contributions to individual happiness and consequently collective peace. In order to continuously improve human / personal development processes, a structured improvement systematic is required as I have added to the ‘Happy Colofrul Growth’ framework and explained in this article.

Reading makes happy

There I’m breathing, seeking harmony

Sing cicades’ and black crows’ voices
Drowned out by the crowds percussions

Dog runs, barbeque, photography
Calm and loud with friends and family

Transitions

mathias-sager-RGB-20161029

See it.
You can’t ignore, so open.
Happy natural simplicity? Understand you
live with it.
Translate.

Believe it.
You must not fear, so dare.
Colorful enriched diversity? Trust you
deal with it.
Transpose.

Act on it.
You won’t stagnate, so share.
Growth enabled genuineness? Choose you
succeed with it.
Transform.

Be it.
You’ll never arrive, so live.
For all and everywhere? Here and now you
melt with it.
Transcend.

Affirmation ‘From ambition to purpose’

mathias-sager-from-ambition-to-purpose-painting-201604

«From amition to purpose.»

Generally, if results are not achieved, it is often not because of missing tools (the wrong «how to»), but because of the wrong purpose and motivation (the wrong «why»). Human beings are most willing to open their mind in a more selfless attitude, if fears of external pressure or desire for reward are overcome by faith and intrinsic motivation.

Practicing with a Master of Zen Shiatsu

Kimura-sensei, with whom I had the privilege to meet and practice, embodies for me the true Zen spirit for the following reasons: (1) Giving whole-heartedly, (2) letting actions speak rather than words, and (3) coming to the true point without attachment and judgement.

Yes, we can.

mathias-sager-military-hunger-quote-equality

We can fly to the moon since 1969. We can also spend every 8 days 30 billion dollars for military, what would be enough to eradicate world hunger for a year. And we can count every four seconds a person who dies of hunger or hunger-related causes. – Mathias Sager

We need to claim ownership for our virtual identity data

Summary

Personal values such as care for society and an increased awareness regarding risks of the ongoing digitization and datafication of everyday life will be determining factors for citizen participation in the governance of smart home provision.

A multi-stakeholder cooperative approach could solve adoption-hindering constraints, such as lack of interoperability, in short-term in minimum on a local level. Citizens would own their data, including its destiny, and secure peer-to-peer data market platforms could evolve empowering citizen economic participation.

My proposed framework with its comprehensive data value system view and multi-stakeholder cooperation at its core might provide a useful tool for strategy discussions for any stakeholder who has an interest in healthy development of the IoT, big data, and sustainable smart home provisions.
